SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Social Development
Social Development

The young adult is now cut off from the bonds required by childhood and adolescence and has gained autonomy as an accumulation of physical, mental and social development in previous years. Because of all these, the basic efforts of the individual in young adulthood are directed to the outside world. The individual has entered into new relationships in the family, business life and community of friends.

However, almost all adults devote most of their time to the family.

During this period, the young family moves from their parents to a home life; however, family ties are still preserved. Young gets married, starts to create his own family and manage his own home. During this formation, parents help new couples. When necessary in the future, new couples help their parents.

This new family structure shows a different structure from the traditional family and the nuclear family. This structure is located in the middle of both family structures. That’s why it’s called the “extended nuclear family”. In this family structure, independent and active relations are established with the old generations and the new generations (Onur, 1986:124; Morgan-King-Weisz-Schopler, 1983:484 and Weiten, 1989:418).

During this period, the young man separated from his parents and started to establish his own life. Naturally, it has to work in order to survive. Occupational choice occurred at the end of adolescence and the individual began working in young adulthood.

Another important issue in this period is social relations. This varies according to the circumstances of individuals and families. The person breaks away from his family and enters new human relations and tends towards social participation. The young adult now engages in interpersonal relationships as an independent individual; participates in social, cultural and political activities.

With this participation, the individual gets rid of the ordinariness of daily life.

Another important issue is moral development. Moral development in adulthood can be characterized as the use of previously acquired moral structures as a whole and their application to life. In that case, the changes that occur in adulthood occur as a result of the person using the patterns they have formed before in a more consistent way.

In other words, it is the consistency of the highest level reached before (Onur, 1986:158-159).

In addition, it is seen that there are some development tasks specific to certain periods of life. These continue to exist from the beginning to the end of life. The main development tasks in this period are as follows:

  • Choosing a partner
  • With partner
  • Learning to live with
  • Having children and taking on parenting roles
  • Bringing-up
  • Ability to manage the house
  • Have a livelihood job
  • Ability to meet social responsibilities
  • Being able to join a social group appropriate to the situation (Baymur, 1994: 63)
